CULTURAL NORMS

Iranian cultural norms require women to cover their heads with a headscarf, wear trousers (or a floor length skirt), and a long-sleeved tunic or coat that reaches to mid-thigh or knee. Men should wear long trousers and long-sleeve shirts. Men are requested to avoid wearing short shorts and extremely short sleeves and tight shirts in public. Women are expected to cover their head and hair with a scarf, while wearing long-sleeve shirts to cover their hands and loose clothing that covers the body. Foreign women are not however expected to wear a burka or anything that fully covers. We advise that female delegates bring scarfs with them when they travel to this event. Tipping is not widely expected in Iran and the majority of restaurants will include a service charge. Alcohol is illegal in Iran and cannot be purchased or consumed.

MONEY

Credit cards are not yet usable in Iran; all payments should be done in cash. Traveller’s cheques are also invalid in Iran. The dominant payment method is cash so please bring sufficient cash for the duration of your stay. We recommend you bring EUR, GBP, AED or Iranian Rial. The Iranian official currency is Rial (IRR) but the common unit for the public is the Toman (1 Toman = 10 Rial). Currency exchange counters and special banks branches are available at the Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA), and around Tehran city.

Exchange rates*:

1 USD ≈ 30,000 IRR

1 Euro ≈ 33,800 IRR

1 Pound ≈ 42,600 IRR

* subject to daily fluctuation according to market rates
